Alphabet of Medieval Medicine
Drop-cap alphabet-in-progress, illustrating different practices and beliefs of the medieval ages. Each letter has a poem to go along with it that adds some humor to the project.
A is for Astrology, cures divined from the stars. Gout and sepsis are common, for those born under Mars.
B is for Bloodletting, leeches stuck to your skins. Suck the bad humors out, let the good humors in.
C is for Cauterization, a method for searing flesh closed. For amputations a hot poker's needed, to blister a vein that's exposed.
D is for Dwale, an anesthetic made of herbs. Deadly nightshade in your wine, helps dull pain that disturbs.
E is for enema, for when you're feeling down. A quick flush will do you wonders, and turn you right around.
F is for flagellation, a penance for misdeeds. To keep from catching sickness, a whip is all one needs.
G is for Garlic, to stave off plague and disease. A helpful ward for vampires, bit not so much for fleas.
